Baccarat Closepacks, Carpet Grounds, and Gridels
the finest ever made anywhere period

I realize this is completely objective – in my opinion modern Baccarat Closepacks (concentric or not) and Carpet Grounds comprise some of the finest representations of these forms ever made. A decent 1850 era Baccarat closepack sells for $15,000 yet you can get a later made version by the same company that is equally well made or better in a fascinating and beautiful variety of styles for a small fraction of that. And while these modern Baccarats may not be as rare as the 19th Century versions, they are still quite rare and far more normally found in fine original condition than are the antiques which typically have been restored to some extent and/or are damaged. I included Gridels in these pages because they are often closepacks as well.

The canes include all the signs of the zodiac– they did this so they would not be confused with their antique closepacks – as well as an “8” cane for 1958. The quality of these is superior to the 19th century weights. 3 5/16 inch diameter; 2 inches tall; one pound and seven ounces. Condition is excellent and essentially perfect - amazing for a 60-year-old piece of glass art. This is seriously as killer weight. $1100

PW3128. Baccarat 1970 Zodiac Church Weight Museum Piece numbered edition. Fabulous, classic, colorful, intricate closepack. This is an amazingly intricate piece of glass art. Look at the intricacy of the artisanship involved. The Baccarat logo is etched into the base along with the number 9 and 1970. The canes include all the signs of the zodiac – they did this so they would not be confused with their antique counterparts. Date cane “B1970” is embedded within the closepack.  Paul Dunlop noted that it took Baccarat three to four months to make enough canes to produce 150 church weights. They began making them in the modern era in 1957, so by 1970 they had them perfected, as this beautiful weight testifies. 3 1/8 inch diameter;  2 inches tall; one pound and three ounces. Condition is excellent with slight shelf wear. $650
